Hi guys, I have a modern PC set up in my room with a wifi card, which picks up my router downstairs. I now have a lovely old eMac (also in my room), which has no wireless connectivity but I was wondering, is it possible to receive internet if I were to plug in an Ethernet cable from my PC to the Mac?

So I'd have Router <wireless> PC <ethernet> Mac.

Any help would be much obliged.

Yeah, sure. You can set up the PC to share its wireless connection with its wired connection. It's called "Internet Connection Sharing" (ICS) in Windows. How creative, eh?

Open up Network Connections in the control panel, get the properties of the wireless connection, then check a Sharing or Advanced tab for an appropriate option.

Awesome! So any Ethernet cable will work to connect them both?

Yep. The traffic to/from the eMac will go through the PC.

Hey I finally have an Ethernet cable. And yep, you guessed it. Problems. When I check the ICS and hit OK it gives me an error message saying "An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled.

Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled.
A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing."

Any help would be appreciated.

You have to change the network of your router to something else. I am guessing that your router is set to give IP addresses that look like 192.168.0.x - change it to 192.168.3.x

Why cant you move the router to your room and plug it in directly?

No phone line socket up here. My rooms a good 15 meters or more from the phone line socket.

Oh btw, still haven't got it figured out yet, played around with changing the router IP go nowhere... I'm just gonna wait till college starts and ask an IT guru there. Thanks a heap guys!
